Exponent
Fresh skin care, on-demand
The Exponent Pro System is a precision-dosed, refillable skincare package that keeps unstable active ingredients at maximum potency by mixing individual doses of skincare serum on demand.
Common active ingredients in skincare products like Vitamin C, Retinol, and CoQ10 degrade quickly when exposed to air, light, and water—as much as 40% in 8 weeks. The Exponent Pro System keeps those ingredients sealed and fresh until the moment of use. A simple twist and press motion combines powdered active ingredients with a liquid base to deliver precisely measured single doses of skincare serum every time.

Powder and liquid ingredients are dispensed with a single twist and press motion, then mixed by hand.
The design process started with sketches and renderings to refine options for product architecture, dispensing mechanisms, and material treatments.
We chose glass jars for refill packaging to eliminate single-use plastic. I worked on the industrial and interaction design of the refills, finding ways to use off-the-shelf jars as a design element while simplifying the product architecture.
I built milled plastic prototypes to refine the shape of the tray so that mixing by hand would be as smooth as possible.
With the engineering and product architecture mostly established, the client pivoted to a new brand identity, which meant reimagining the look and feel of the product while preserving as much of the engineering work as possible.
