Electric Piano

Electric Piano

This page documents work in progress on a personal project: designing ang building an electromechanical reed piano from scratch using 3D printed parts.

Pressing a key flings the hammer upward to strike a metal reed while simultaneously lifting a damper. The hammer bounces off the reed and catches at the top of its stroke and the damper remains up while the key is pressed.

Prototypes

I started with a single key and built up to four. The first few prototypes used jigsaw blades for the reeds before moving to laser-cut spring steel. The four-key versions use a bass guitar pickup to amplify the vibrations of the metal reeds as they’re struck by the hammers.
